The Johnny Spice Swing Orchestra Charts
As lots of you know I like arranging, especially for big band and when I started running ‘The Spiceys’ (The Johnny Spice Swing Orchestra “Eastbourne’s Own 18 Piece Big Band”) about 11 years ago I needed to produce some charts that they could readily play. The orchestra has improved and developed beyond recognition over that time and I’ve steadily continued to add arrangements to our library. Now, I have no delusions about my ability and I’m quite aware of my limitations and lack of advanced aura/harmony skills, (I wish I were Dave Wolpe!) however, the charts I’ve produced do seem to work and are very, very approachable and quick to master. The salient point is that they’re written (in the main) for strict tempo (ish) ballroom and latin dancing. There are plenty of the old ‘Lally’ style charts about, but I’ve found that It’s not easy to find library for a full 18 piece band that covers quickstep, foxtrot, waltz, cha cha, rumba, tango, samba, jive etc., etc.
Anyway, I have decided that ‘The Spiceys’ shouldn’t be the only sorry bunch to have to suffer my ‘deathless masterpieces’, I’m ready to inflict them on the wider world! POA, as they say.
If fact there’s a big band in Gettysburg (Run by a very nice trombonist called Joel Sears) that has a couple of dozen of my things in their pad. Fortunately I’m protected from revenge attacks by the Atlantic Ocean!

Dr. Bone’s charts are written for full big band (most with score) and many are specifically written for Ballroom and Latin American dancing. They are very approachable in technique and range.
